Québec’s first certified carbon neutral company

Ideum.ca Inc, an industrial design firm located in Montreal, became Québec’s first certified carbon neutral company earlier this summer. Eventhough Canada signed the Kyoto Protocol which requires a 6% reduction of 1990 CO2 emission level by 2010, this Montreal company has gone for a 100% CO2 emisson right away.

Ideum.ca Inc is Canada’s second carbon neutral company as certified by Ottawa’s Tree Canada Foundation.

Trees are Nature’s air filters. They process harmful CO2 emission into necessary oxygen.

Interested companies can have their yearly CO2 emission assessed by Tree Canada Foundation which then evaluates the required number of trees needed to neutralize the company’s CO2 emission. Tree Canada Foundation will then plant the trees in Canada. The company reimburses the costs incurred by Tree Canada Foundation.

This initiative allows certified companies to use the Foundation’s trademark and “carbon neutral company” logo.

Ideum.ca produces 6 tons of CO2 every year through its basic business activities (like heating). Tree Canada Foundation has to plant 11 trees to neutralize this amount of CO2 and it has to be done every year in order to maintain Ideum’s certification.

“We have been looking for some time to find a simple, practical way to do our share in reducing global warming. This program beside being completely natural is also bringing back trees in our world. “ mentions Louis Desrosiers Ideum.ca’s owner and president.

“Since we became part of this program, we decide it was in our interest to go a step further.” Since early this summer, all the company’s projects have been carbon neutral, not just its regular operating practices but also its clients jobs.

“We estimate the amount of CO2 emissions produced by our client’s contract, at 2, 3 or 5 tons depending on the job . We know that every ton of CO2 emission requires 3 trees to become neutral. We get the Tree Canada foundation to plant the correct number of trees to maintain the project’s neutrality.”

“We do this in our client’s name. We pay for those cost. It’s free for our customers. We take the cost out of our profits. We believe our customers appreciate the fact that their project is carbon neutral, thus environment friendly.”

“We strongly believe that we have to have a responsible, common sense approach towards the environment.”
